Airport traffic down in April, up in May
During
April, 813,329 passengers traveled through Southwest Florida
International Airport (RSW), a decrease of 4.3 percent
compared to April 2009. The traffic leader in April was Delta
with 159,448 passengers traveling to and from Fort Myers.
Rounding out the top five airlines were AirTran (131,712),
JetBlue (108,177), Southwest (92,801) and Continental
(82,156).
During May,
552,105 passengers traveled through RSW, an increase of 5.3
percent compared to May 2009. The traffic leader in May was
Delta with 128,995 passengers traveling to and from Fort
Myers. Rounding out the top five airlines were AirTran
(84,158), Southwest (74,293), US Airways (65,124) and
Continental (50,451).

AirTran
Airways now is providing nonstop service from RSW to Grand
Rapids, Mich. Flights depart Fort Myers for Grand Rapids at
11:08 a.m. each Saturday and Sunday.
Local airports contribute more than $3.8 billion to local
economy
According
to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), RSW and
Page Field General Aviation Airport (FMY) contributed more
than $3.8 billion to the region’s economy in 2009.
The FDOT
study looked at various on-airport and off-airport
aviation-related activities expressed as direct, indirect and
induced (multiplier) impacts. The study showed RSW contributed
more than $3.7 billion to the local economy from airport and
related-airport activities and accounted for 41,588 jobs. Page
Field’s contribution was $94.5 million and that the airport is
responsible for more than 987 jobs.
